Frugal Friday: Saving on Christmas Gifts for Adults

Posted by: The Homemaker's Resource in , , ,

The holiday season just sort of sneaks up on us every year, and without advanced planning, spending can really get out of hand. Here are some of my tips for meaningful gift giving this Christmas for the adults in your life.

Consider a Secret Santa gift exchange.
Most adults would tend to agree that they would rather spend more of their gift giving budget on giving the kids a good Christmas. So, consider doing a gift exchange where each person draws one name. Set a spendign limit and have each person give a few gift ideas that might fall within that limit. Each person will get one nice gift, and no one will go broke in the process.

Consider doing a White Elephant or Yankee Swap gift exchange.
The rules for these exchanges seem to vary by family or geographical region, but the goal remains the same, lots of fun, and lots of laughs. HERE is an official guide to the way it is done. Make it work however you want. Use gag gifts, new gifts, whatever will be fun for your group. Some of our funnies moments have been with gag gifts.

Give an experience.
Let's face it, stuff breaks, clothes wear out, and trends change, but memories have the potential to last a lifetime. Giving an experience comes in many forms.

  • Giving instruction: Are you known for your famous banana bread? Does your aunt love your banana bread? Why not invite her over to show her your secret recipe and bake a loaf or two? You can do this with instrument lessons, gardening or cooking lessons, really anything a person might want to learn.
  • Giving service: We all have unique gifts and talents and matching our gifts with others' needs can make someone's Christmas. Some ideas to get you started: babysitting for families with children, meal preparation or household chores for folks who are always on the go, tax return preparation, car or home maintenance. You name it, your time can make a very valuable gift.

Write a tribute.
Our lives are so fast paced. With cell phones, emails, and text messages, the simple pleasure of a hand written letter seems to be slowly fading away. Who wouldn't love a heartfelt letter from a loved one sharing memories, maybe enclosing a few pictures, and generally telling that person what they mean to you? Gifts like this cannot be bought in any store, and are often regarded as more precious than the most expensive gift.

Family Pictures.
Family members will greatly appreciate a family photo, even if it is not professionally done. With digital cameras so common, it should not be a big deal to borrow one if you do not own one. Then you can print and frame the photo. Another bonus is that packaged carefully, photos are inexpensive to ship to loved ones who live far away.

Re-Gift (GASP)!
I know that this is a controversial option, but as long as you follow a few simple guidelines it does not have to be regarded as cheap or tacky. If you have, in the past, received a gift that you cannot use and you know that someone else would like it, then it is far better to give that item to a person who will appreciate it than to throw it away or have it gathering dust. Here are a few things to do to keep a re-gift from becoming troublesome.

  1. Don't give it back to the person who gave it to you. If you aren't sure, just don't do it!
  2. Make sure all tags are gone from the first gifting.
  3. Don't tell anyone it is a re-gift. No says that you have to spend a fortune on it for it to be special.
  4. Conversely, don't lie if asked about it being a re-gift. Just say something like "I really was so glad to have received that from so and so, and when I thought about how happy Jane would be to have it, I just had to give it to her."
  5. Freshen it up. Make sure packaging doesn't look beat up. No one wants a gift that looks like junk.

Personally, I wouldn't mind being the recipient of a thoughtful re-gift. Just don't make it a fruitcake.

Make it yourself.
Baked goods, home canned goodies, scarves, sweaters, family cookbooks, scrapbooks, blankets, you name it. If you can make it, you can gift it. Just think carefully about what folks would enjoy and you are good at.

So, those are some of my favorite gift ideas for adults.

Have any other ideas? Leave me a comment!

Frugal Friday: Generosity Challenge

Posted by: The Homemaker's Resource in

Wow! I took a look at my August Statistics and was very excited to see that my average weekly grocery bill was only $31.24!

I have been so thankful for the savings and modest stockpile that I have been able to accumulate using coupons and sales. Over the last many months I have continually been challenged with pulling myself out of my self-focus. One challenge I have made for myself is to contribute a box of food to my local food pantry every month.

After all, I am able to provide a stockpile of food for my tiny family of two. We are in no danger of going hungry. I personally would rather share the blessings I have received so that someone else in need can be blessed than to keep huge stores in my pantry.

So, dear readers, I want to lay down a challenge: Grab a box or two, and bless your local food pantry with non-perishables and toiletries. Give as generously as you are able. Make it a family event. Teaching generosity is a lesson for all ages.

Check your local phone book for a food bank near you, or visit America's Second Harvest for a list of local charities that can greatly benefit from your donation.

Please leave a comment and tell me how you have blessed others with your shopping skills!

My dear hubby LOVES pound cake. Over the years I have attempted to make him the perfect pound cake. Unfortunately, pretty much all of my attempts have failed...miserably.

Until I found an AMAZING recipe from Paula Deen. This recipe is the closest to store bought pound cake that I have ever found. And my hubby LOVES it, so I am thrilled.

So, check out Paula Deen's Sour Cream Pound Cake, you'll love it too!

Menu Planning Tips

Posted by: The Homemaker's Resource in ,

Nothing is more important for controlling your grocery spending than getting together a great menu plan. I have been doing this for several months and I am a firm believer.

Here are the reasons I am so passionate about it:
  1. Saves time. Investing half an hour of your time per week into making a written plan will save you days of impuls buys and takeout food.
  2. Saves stress. The pressure to provide a delicious and nutritious array of meals can be overwhelming. Having to go no further than your refrigerator door to find out "what's for dinner" will make your day a whole lot brighter.
  3. Saves money. Planning your meals ahead of time allows you to build your grocery list based on a plan and only buy the things you need for the coming week. And when you have everything on hand, you won't be tempted to run out for that $15 specialty pizza!
So, maybe I have you convinced of the benefits to menu planning. The question remains, how do you get started?

Here are some of my best menu planning tips:
  1. Plan all meals and snacks. Use a sheet such as the one I have posted HERE (free to download). Having planned options saves time, worry, and money.
  2. Stick to the plan. For yoru menu plan to work, you need to use it. It may be a challenge to get used to it at first, but once you've worked out the kinks, you'll be glad that you followed through with it. Keep it posted in a central location so that it is always at hand.
  3. Make your menu work for you. You should not be trying to impress anyone with your menu plan. Be realistic about what your family will eat and how much they will eat. This is not the time to make big changes.
  4. Take advantage of menu planning resources. The internet is full of great resources devoted to helping you feed your family well. Two sites that provide free menus complete with grocery lists are Menus 4 Moms and Women's Day Magazine. Some great recipe sites are Cooks.com, Recipezaar, and AllRecipes.com. Check out Hillbilly Housewife for great frugal recipes and cooking tips, along with some sample menus. Or you could check out OrgJunkie.com for weekly menu plans from hundreds of participants.
So, now you are ready to get started with menu planning. I think you will find that you love how much it helps to streamline your week.

Every Day Deserves a Chance

Posted by: The Homemaker's Resource in

Life is not always easy
It is very easy to think about or dwell on the things that are going wrong. These things seem to demand more attention. Their voices drown out the happy songs and pleasant memories that might otherwise occupy my thoughts.

Nearly everyone that I know is trying to make ends meet on budgets that have not grown and food and energy prices that have skyrocketed. Our communities are filled with homes in foreclosure and families in crisis.

A glimpse into our life
These are very difficult circumstances. As for my family, it is just me and my hubby right now. We lost our two beloved children to miscarriage, one at 16 weeks in January, and the other at 10 weeks in May. We are fighting to manage our barely affordable adjustable rate mortgage in a down real estate market. Everyone has their own problems and they are all VERY real.

The last few months since the loss of our second child has been a time of tremendous personal growth for me. I hope you won't mind my sharing some of my thoughts with you.

How my attitude shapes my outlook
Most of the time I have found myself merely making it through the day. I accomplish as many tasks as I can make fit into my busy schedule, but I rarely find a day where I really feel "good." Oh, of course, I do have some bright spots, but there is almost always some cloud of worry, frustration or fear that is sitting right there on the horizon, ready to swoop in and blot out that little ray of sunshine. Pretty terrible way to live, isn't it? Take it from me, I don't really like it either!

Thankfully, it does not seem that these trying times have been without some benefit. I can't say that I have been thankful for the trials that we have endured and are enduring, but I have learned some very important things. I am not perfect, but I am trying to live my life differently as a result of what I have learned.

Giving each day a chance
So much of what shapes my attitude, is well, my attitude. Most of the time I cannot change my circumstances, but I can change my attitude. Memories of past failures and disappointments and future fears can easily make me forget the simple beauty of the day as it is.

Even the most difficult day at work can have something beautiful inside. Maybe it is the hug my husband gives me, holding me close at the end of the hard day. Or maybe it is a beautiful sunset, the rays of light playing off the clouds, displaying the beauty of nature. Perhaps it is the voice of a child, telling you in simple language the joys of their day. I am trying now, to let the good moments of my life ruin those bad days.

Fixing what I can, not worrying about the rest

This is the hardest part for me. It is very tempting to try and plan for every contingency. That can be helpful, but once the planning finishes, it is easy to transfer my energy over to worrying about the outcome.

This worrying accomplishes nothing. It does not change how well I am prepared. It does not change my circumstances. It does not make others feel more loved or valued. It only serves to keep me from noticing the things that are beautiful and wonderful about life. Concern is not a bad thing, but once I have done all that I can, I must rest in my planning, and because I pray, hand it over to God.

Changing my focus
Most of the time, the more I dwell on my sadness, the worse I feel. Oh, don't misunderstand, I want to make sure I properly deal with my emotions, and process the pain, but there is a point where I just roll over the same sadness and depression over, and over. No further progress is being made, I just am starting to feel more sorry for myself.

I am finding that trying to connect with other people and make them feel important is an amazing mood booster. For instance, giving a friend or family a call. Encouraging a friend through their hard time. Putting together items to give away to another person who may need them. These are all things that I have done to take my focus off myself. It always makes me feel better, and it usually makes the other person feel better too!

These are just some of the things I am learning. Tell me, when your life starts to get you down, what do you do?

Tips for Successful Rebate Redemption

Posted by: The Homemaker's Resource in , ,

Rebates are an awesome way to get free and nearly free merchandise. It only requires a little work on your part to make sure it works for you. Here are my best tips for getting started with rebates.

Where to find them:

  • Store circulars and catalogs. Frequently stores will advertise special rebates that they are offering on products. These will either appear in the weekly circular or in a special month long catalog like that at Walgreens.

  • Product packages. Sometimes you will get a nice surprise when you get to the store. Frequently packages have stickers or tags on them announcing the rebate.

  • Internet postings. The internet is filled with bloggers who love to share the good deals they find. Frequently they will point you to rebate announcements on manufacturer’s websites, or post about items that they have found in the store, or through a company mailing list.

  • Coupons circulars. Most of the rebates I have personally taken advantage of were rebates that were featured alongside the coupons in the Sunday paper. Hold on to these when they come out. Many times a store will run a special sale on the item in question within a week or two and this will give you a chance to maximize your savings.

Keys for successful rebates:

  1. Read carefully. Most rebates require an original cash register tape with the purchase price circled, the UPC code from the product (barcode), and the original rebate form. Make sure you read carefully so your rebate isn’t disqualified because of a missed requirement.
  2. Prepare rebate and mail immediately. Prepare the rebate as soon as you get home with the product. Most rebates are never redeemed. Do not let this be you.
  3. Combine coupons with rebates. Most rebates will reimburse you for the full purchase price of the product. That means if you are purchasing a $3.00 item and you have a $1.00 coupon, you will pay $2.00 plus tax and get a $3.00 rebate. Effectively, you get a free product and make $1.00.
  4. Keep track of your rebates. Keep a photocopy of your documentation if possible. If not, keep a written record of the details such as the rebate amount, information you supplied, phone number for the company, and the date you mailed the rebate. There are online resources to help you track your rebates, too, if you prefer a digital method of organization.
  5. Follow up. Before you mail your rebate, make a note on your calendar at the time that you expect your rebate check to arrive. Most rebate forms will indicate a wait time of anywhere between six and ten weeks. If you haven’t received your check by then, it is probably worth giving the company a call.
  6. Cash rebate checks frequently. Once the checks start coming in, make sure that they don’t sit around gathering dust. Keep them handy for your next bank run.
  7. Use your rebate money to purchase other rebate items in the future. When you bring your rebate checks to the bank, get them cashed and keep that cash in a special envelope devoted exclusively to purchasing rebate items. As long as you consistently cash your checks and replenish this envelope, you will effectively be spending the same money over and over.

Do you have any tips about rebates? Let me know when you comment below!

Frugal Friday: Hurricane Preparedness

Posted by: The Homemaker's Resource in ,

It looks like it will be an active hurricane season! It is still early, and we are already deep into the list of storm names. Thankfully, even when the uncertainty of the weather looms, you can be secure in your good planning. Check out some of my emergency preparedness tips:

Please note, I am not a professional. I have lived through many hurricane's and am sharing some of my tips. Please make an informed decision about what is best for you and your family.

Have an adequate supply of food and water for your family, including pets. Plan for three days worth.

  • You can stock up on non-perishable goods, batteries, and bottled beverages throughout the year. Not waiting until the last minute will help you save time, money and hassle.
  • Consider filling your bathtub with water before the storm. You can use this water to flush toilets, take small baths, wash dishes, and other non-food uses in the event that you lose water service.
  • Once you see that you are within the probably strike range of a tropical system, start bagging up the ice from your ice maker, and stocking up your freezer with it. This will save you having to run out and buy extra ice for coolers, or to keep your food cold in the event of power outages.
  • Make sure that you have a bottle of chlorine bleach handy. In case of sanitary spills, you will need to have a way to make sure things stay clean. Also, in the even that you need to sanitize your drinking water, it will be handy to have nearby.
  • If you prefer to avoid bottled water, start filling up containers and pans with water when you see a storm is on its way. Water will stay fresh and usable in these containers throughout the storm.
  • Consider using your grill or campstove for cooking in the event that your electricity goes off. Check your propane levels and make sure you have an extra tank.
Have an Emergency Plan BEFORE the storm strikes.
  • Concerned friends and relatives will all want to know how you are doing. If your phone service is interrupted, it will be difficult to get a hold of you. Designate a friend or family member out of state to be the person to call in case you are unreachable. Let that person pass along information to concerned family and friends in the event that you are attempting to clean up a big mess.
  • If you have pets and you are evacuating, PLEASE have prior arrangements made for their care. Some hotels will take animals, so be aware of where they are located. If you plan on bringing your pet to a home out of state, please make sure that your host is aware you are bringing your pet.
  • Have all of your vital information stored in a safe location, or ready to transport with you in case of evacuation. This includes, but is not limited to, marriage and divorce certificates, deeds, proof of insurance, birth certificates, passports, etc. Consider having your items stored in a bank safety deposit box if you don't want to take them with you. If you prefer, scan copies of your documents and store them electronically on a cd, or laptop computer that you will take with you.
  • Document your belongings. Renters and home owners alike should take a video of their home and belongings for insurance purposes. If you are unable to take a video, take pictures and make a detailed list of all belongings. Then make sure to bring these documents with you.
  • Know when to leave. Decide ahead of time what circumstances will prompt you to leave your home. Do not wait to make a split second decision when the storm starts and other folks are already on the road. You could end up stuck on the interstate and that would be very bad.
This is just a brief rundown of things that I have learned over the years and storms that I have experienced.

Check out these other sources of hurricane preparedness information:
Please share your tips! I would love to know how you prepare for natural emergencies!

Walgreens: Getting Started

Posted by: The Homemaker's Resource in , ,

It took me a while to warm up to Walgreens. I will admit, that I was a very devoted CVS fan. The deals were plentiful and easy over at CVS, and for some reason I couldn't get quite as excited about WAGS.

But, after a few months worth of trying again, I am starting to think that Walgreen's might just be pulling up neck-in-neck with CVS for my drugstore devotion!

So, I wanted to share a brief intro into deals at Walgreens.

Lingo

RR- Register Rewards. This is the coupon that prints out at the checkout when you purchase Register Rewards earning products.

Easy Saver-The rebate catalog that comes out every month. It contains both store coupons and the list of rebate items for the month.

Working the Deals

Rebates:

  • Submitted once a month (even if several items purchased throughout the month.)
  • Can submit online or by mail. Online is much quicker, though.
  • Rebate comes either as a paper check which is mailed to you or in form of a Walgreen’s gift card. The gift card is best because you get the full value of your rebate PLUS 10%. Use the same gift card each time to avoid confusion.
  • They will give you the full rebate for the item even if you use coupons to reduce your out of pocket cost. Money making is a possibility with this method.

Register Rewards:
  • Similar to CVS Extra Care Bucks, except that the number of times you can do the deal is only limited by how many times you go into the store that week.
  • However, if you have a $3 register reward from buying Bandaids, you cannot use the $3 register reward to pay for another round of Bandaids that will earn you register rewards. But you can use it to buy the shampoo that earns you register rewards. Basically you just can’t use it for the same thing that got it for you.

This has been a relatively short introduction into the world of Walgreens, but if you have become familiar with CVS shopping, many of the same principles do apply.

Please let me know if I have left out anything that might be helpful to pass along. I love comments!

Great Deals Online

Posted by: The Homemaker's Resource in

This week I have come across some really great deal sources that I just had to pass along.

I love my local Dollar Tree, but did you know that you can purchase items from the Dollar Tree online and have them shipped to your local store?

The products are still the low $1 or less/item prices that you are used to, and for a limited time, there are no shipping costs. The only catch is that it looks like you have to order a case of whatever you are looking for to get the price and have it shipped.

I love this idea, because I never quite know what will be available at my Dollar Tree at any given time that I visit. Now I can order online and know exactly what is there!

Thanks to Denise for featuring this on her site.

Another awesome site that I stumbled upon this week is Goodwill's Online Site.

You can shop the bargain deals from the comfort of your own home, and have your bargains sent to you for $7.99 shipping now matter how many treasures that you find. This is one for the browser bookmarks!

Thanks to Kristin for blogging about this store.

Menu Planning Monday: September 1, 2008

Posted by: The Homemaker's Resource in

I decided that I should probably start to list meals other than just dinner on my menu plan, so this will be the first week that I have done so. I am thinking that it will help to eliminate some of the confusion of what to pack for lunches.

Breakfasts:

  • Cereal with milk, and a piece of fruit
  • Eggs and toast with a piece of fruit
Lunches:
  • Rice and bean burrito and a yogurt cup
  • Leftovers
  • Hotdog
  • Sandwich with fruit
Dinners:
  • Chili with Corn Bread and a vegetable
  • Beef stew with a whole wheat roll
  • Meatloaf with green beans and mashed potatoes
  • Grilled cheese sandwiches and a cup of soup
  • Marinaded mesquite chicken thighs, with corn o'brien, green beans, and mashed potatoes
  • Leftovers
